Importance of Islamic Education
Man needs to learn everything when he comes into the world; he is ignorant, and cannot even learn completely the conditions of life in twenty years. Indeed, he needs to go on learning till the end of his life. Also he is sent to the world in a most weak and impotent form, and can only rise to his feet in one or two years. Only in fifteen years can he distinguish between harm and benefit, and with the help of mankind’s experience attract things advantageous to him and avoid others that are harmful. This means that man’s innate duty is to be perfected through learning and to proclaim his worship of Allah (S.T.W.) and servitude to Him through supplication. That’s why Qur’an was revealed as guidance to humanity.
Qur’an gives importance to knowledge so much. This is because knowledge is the basis of all good; it generates actions that are based on the commandments of Allah and the instructions of the Prophet. Hence, every Muslim must instill in his mind a desire to seek knowledge. Allah (Most Exalted is He) instructed His Prophet — and thus all Muslims — to ask Allah to increase him in knowledge. He said:
“And say: My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.” (Qur’an, Ta-Ha 20:114)
“Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim (male and female).” (Hadith)
After providing us with the capability to contemplate, think and differentiate between things, He instructed us to know Him, to know his Prophets and to know His Religion, Islam.
“Allah will exalt those who believe among you, and those who have been granted knowledge to high ranks.” (Qur’an, Al-Mujadila 58:11,)
If Muslims truly realize the importance Islam places on knowledge and its virtues, they will definitely be keen to learn and teach others.
“If Allah wants to do good to a person, he makes him very knowledgeable in the Deen.” (Related by Bukhari and Muslim)
This textbook entitled “Fundamentals of Faith” will enable students to gain clear knowledge about belief in Allah, His angels, His books to mankind, His Prophets and Messengers, the Day of Judgment, and Destiny. Basic tenets of belief, the truths of Quran are explained in clear and definite manner by using easily understood stories, comparisons and reasoned proofs. Therefore, this book will encourage the students to use critical thinking and reasoning; to make them involved and active in learning process by making activities and having some assignments.
